Kansas City tested AI with drone images to speed FEMA damage assessments. In a March 23 pilot, drones captured photos that Bellwether AI analyzed in about 23 minutes, cutting paperwork, improving safety, and freeing staff for recovery work. The project, tied to the Defense Innovation Unit, showed how aerial data and automation can replace slower street canvassing.
Minneapolis may pause new or expanded data centers as leaders weigh AI growth against the impacts on power, water, and the community. The City Council will vote on May 21, while state lawmakers consider broader rules. The city needs clear regulations before allowing projects that strain local resources. Data centers could, however, boost downtown property values as offices struggle after remote work.
Carnegie Mellon is opening a new Physical AI Research Center with Fujitsu to build AI‑powered machines and robots for industries. Based at CMUʼs Robotics Innovation Center in Pittsburgh, the work will target needs in manufacturing, logistics, construction, infrastructure, and health care, especially where labor shortages and safety risks are rising. Experts from multiple fields will team up with Fujitsu to make physical AI reliable enough to work safely alongside people.

Mayor Michelle Wu: Expanding AI literacy across Boston schools
Michelle Wu is treating AI as an important skill that every student should learn. In the city announcement, she says Boston is a major tech city, so its public schools should help students prepare for a future where AI is part of work and daily life. The goal is to make sure public school students get access to these skills, not just students in private schools or extra programs.
Wu, Boston Public Schools Superintendent Mary Skipper, and entrepreneur Paul English announced a partnership that brings together the city, universities, and industry leaders. The aim is to make AI learning part of the school curriculum in a serious and lasting way.
Paul English is giving $1 million to help start the program. The money is meant to support students and teachers with lessons, training, and real career connections. The focus is on helping students build skills that can support them in the job market as the economy changes.
The program will begin in high schools. That makes sense because older students are closer to college, careers, and real workplace decisions. The goal is for students to graduate knowing how to use AI in a smart, careful, and responsible way. One teacher from each Boston high school will be trained during the summer, so they can bring the lessons into classrooms in the fall.
Students are not starting from nothing. Some AI-related work is already happening in classrooms. Now the district wants a more organized approach that teaches both AI skills and ethics. The plan also includes AI ambassadors in high schools, teacher training, and curriculum shaped with help from industry experts.
UMass Boston will play an important role in the program. The Paul English Applied Artificial Intelligence Institute will help develop lessons, support teachers, provide students with more learning opportunities, and explore ways AI can improve school operations.
Industry leaders will also be involved through a formal advisory board. The city announced a BPS AI Industry Advisory Board led by Paul English and Ellen Rubin of Glasswing Ventures. The board will review the curriculum, advise students and teachers, and support hands-on activities such as hackathons. This gives students exposure to real-world AI work while keeping the school district in charge of the program.
Wu is also trying to address common concerns about AI. She said the program will not hand over family data and that students should learn to think critically about AI. The goal is not to let AI replace learning or teaching. It is to help students understand how to use AI wisely and question its results when needed.
The biggest question is whether the program can last. A $1 million gift can help launch it, but long-term success will depend on continued funding, teacher support, and strong planning. GBH noted that the Boston Teachers Union supports professional development but is cautious about whether a one-time grant can create lasting change.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), which oversees Medicare, uses claims analytics to catch unusual billing and stop fraud before payments go out.
