Its fire protection district is adding five AI-powered autonomous fire suppression aircraft designed to reach fires in terrain that ground crews cannot access quickly. In a region where wildfire risk shapes much of local planning, faster response in remote areas carries direct consequences for resident safety and property protection.

Chatbots represent more accessible entry points for smaller agencies. Orland Park, Illinois, approved a three-year contract for an AI chatbot that answers resident questions about permits, services, and village information at any hour, in multiple languages. The tool also generates service tickets automatically for issues like potholes or broken streetlights, at an initial cost of $106,500 to the town. For agencies without the staff to field routine inquiries around the clock, this kind of deployment offers a way to close service gaps without adding headcount.

Infrastructure and asset management form another area of growth. Hailey, Idaho has used AI-driven acoustic leak detection to identify water losses that had gone unnoticed, an effort now saving an estimated 59,000,000 gallons annually while lowering maintenance costs. St. Joseph, Missouri, has taken a related approach with an AI-based asset management platform that monitors streets, signs, and roads, allowing the city to identify problems without relying on manual surveys.

Public safety applications are also taking hold in smaller communities. Dover, New Jersey, connected AI video analytics to its existing camera network, adding weapons detection and facial recognition capability to the municipal building, public library, and other facilities. Officials plan to extend the system to support crime deterrence, illegal dumping detection, and traffic and crowd monitoring across the town's business district.

When Bowling Green, Kentucky began work on a 25-year community plan, officials opened an online polling platform for residents to submit anonymous input. Close to 7,900 residents participated, and an AI tool analyzed the responses to surface themes for planners, including requests for more healthcare providers, additional restaurants and grocery stores on the north side of town, and preservation of historic buildings.
